Fishing Stories

Testimonial from Jeff Poppema, Customer:

"I have known Den for over 30 years, first as my high school science teacher and later as a teaching colleague. As an educator, I value the ability to teach others well. As an avid outdoorsman, I appreciate those who are willing and able to pass on the love and respect for our natural resources. Den does both exceptionally well. If you are looking for more than a fishing trip, Den is the guide for you. He'll not only put you on a lot of fish, but he'll help you develop the skills necessary to become a better fisherman on your own. He is especially good with kids of all ages." - Jeff Poppema

Testimonial from Dr. Mike Jones, Repeat Customer:

Den Takes Us Fishing.

Brad and I have been going with Den, a local fishing guide, for many years. It has become a traditional event. Brad has missed a time and Derrill went with me. But a trip to Big Trout isn't complete without a guided trip with Den. We catch only Bass, mostly jigging with plastic purple worms. We just told Den to take us fishing with him the first time we went. We don't care if we keep any. So, Den takes us to the best spots because we throw every fish back! The trip is only for one 4-hour-afternoon. Den brings everything, but we use our fancy G. Loomis rods. Usually, we catch over 40 amongst the 3 of us. Last time out it was 50 something, and good size of 2 to over 3 pounds. Mostly large mouth bass. Den gives a fishing seminar during the summer in Pine River, down by the park next to the river. Den has a steady clientele, and you have to book him early. It is a day with Brad I always enjoy, although he and Den catch the most fish. The general virtual directory link is here. Remember, these are Large (up to 1 Meg) high quality digital picture files, even with jpg. Slide your cursor over a picture for a caption. - Dr. Mike Jones

About Your Guide

Den Pluimer has been professionally guiding the Brainerd Lakes area for over 27 years. He started his professional career at In Fisherman's Camp Fish, a fishing camp in Walker, Minnesota dedicated to teaching youth how to fish while impressing on them the values necessary to succeed in life. Pluimer worked at Camp Fish with the Lindner brothers, Al and Ron, as well as several other well-known guides and fishermen from the area including Reggie Thiel and Al Maas. After Camp Fish, Pluimer moved on to his own guide business, where he routinely boats 1600 - 2000 largemouth bass a summer with his customers. While his specialty is the largemouth bass, Pluimer successfully guides for northern pike or walleye as well.

When Pluimer isn't guiding, he spends his time in the off-season teaching high school biology. Den holds a Master's Degree in biology and has been teaching at the high school level for over 35 years. In fact, his background and education in the sciences is one of the things that sets Den apart from other fishing guides in the area. Pluimer offers his customers much more than a fishing trip - they get a science lesson free of charge! Pluimer's knowledge of nature and the elements surrounding him on the lake are passed on to his customers, turning an ordinary fishing trip into a true outdoor experience.

Den and his wife Sheri reside in the Pine River area, where they raised their 3 children.

Pine River's free Fishing Seminars are led by noted area guide, Den Pluimer. Seminars are held every Tuesday morning at 10:00 during the summer months at the dam in Pine River. These seminars are intended to give pertinent, timely, and relevant information about the local fishing. Den has been guiding Pine River area lakes for over 27 years and is on the water 6 days a week, allowing him to reveal which lakes are hot, which presentations the most effective, and how to fish during that particular week. He provides seminar attendees with a tackle box full of fish catching ideas! Here's your chance to pick the brain of a real north country guide without costing you a cent!
